Active Office System – FAQ

Active Office System FAQ

What is the Active Office System?

The Active Office System is a term coined by Tony Olejnicki to describe productivity improvement and employee engagement training program for sedentary office workers.
The active office behaviour allows sedentary office employees to perform at a high level of cognitive availability and metabolic energy throughout the entire day. The program is based on a sustainable physiological transformation process of the Active Office System.
Four pillars form the foundation of the Active Office System: reduction of chronic stress, quality sleep, Circadian Nutrition System (CNS) and NEAT activity.

Why implement the Active Office System?

The human body has evolved for movement, walking and not sitting, over 200,000 years of human evolution. We switched to sitting behaviour only 100 years ago and to intensive sitting practice within the last 50 years.
We stop suddenly in the early 20s and transitioned to 8-12 hours motionless sitting. This weakens the muscular system, slows down metabolism, degrades cognitive availability/agility to 3 hours per day initiating an unhealthy journey.
At the age of 30, the average office employee clocks-in over 44,000 sitting hours. This figure rises to 66,000 hours at the age of 40. It brings you to the edge of physiological disability and 50 cent probability to develop one or more metabolic conditions in your 50s. This includes diabetes, coronary heart disease, early onset of dementia, premature ageing and premature death.
Implementing the Active Office System will slow down, stop, and reverse sedentary risks.

What is Cognitive Availability>

The cognitive availability / cognitive agility describes an active/agile condition of the brain, at the maximum environmental awareness. In this state, when the body awareness combines all the sensory such as vision, touch, proximity awareness, balance and posture supporting muscles. This occurs when the body is in an upright position, at the low but diverse metabolic activity called Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). In the state of maximum cognitive agility, and where the employee is the most effective at work.

What is a NEAT state?

In the NEAT state with diverse metabolic activity. The body uses stored body fat as a major fuel to generate energy. Fat stores twice as much energy per gram as proteins or carbohydrates (carbs) and is able to supply large energy levels to the brain. The production of hormones and enzymes in muscle tissue reaches optimum in the upright position.
The abdominal organs are not constricted hence they work efficiently and contributing to improved metabolism.

What happens to NEAT when you sit down?

It takes the body approximately 20 minutes to transition to sitting. Sitting signals to the brain a rest phase. The brain commences shutting down NEAT processes as well as associated brain areas and brain activities. This affects work effectiveness and slows down metabolism. It also means that your body requires less energy. The food you consumed is no longer required to generate energy, so your body converts it into fat for storage.

Why is NEAT so important?

NEAT has both short term and long term impact on sedentary employees.
In the short term, NEAT improves cognitive availability and metabolic energy. 8 hours of NEAT will extend the cognitive availability/agility from 3 to 8 hours. This, in turn, leads to Productivity improvement when supported by the Process Improvement.
In the long term, NEAT supports improved health outcomes for sedentary employees. A sedentary lifestyle is a major contributor to sedentary conditions such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, early onset of dementia, premature ageing and premature mortality. 50 per cent of sedentary office workers will develop one or more sedentary conditions in their 50s.

What is the Circadian Nutritional System?

The Circadian Nutritional System (CNS) forms a fundamental pillar of the HiACHIEVR Active Office System. The CNS is a universal diet-transparent nutritional system and can be adapted to any well-balanced diet. The evolutionary idea of two phases within the 24 hours cycle, mainly active and a resting phase, forms the basis for the Circadian Nutritional System. During the active phase, we work and eat to generate energy. While in the resting phase we rest the body system and refrain from ingesting any nutrients except water, black tea and black coffee.
This simple approach is extremely beneficial for regulating weight. It keeps organs, hormones and enzymes of the digestive system in good balance and constant, sustainable recovery. The Circadian Nutritional System will also enhance the metabolic energy generated during the working phase.

What are implications of a Sedentary Lifestyle?

Do you spend more than 6 hours a day sitting at work, while commuting and relaxing at home? You are classified as a sedentary person.
The cost impact of Sedentary Lifestyle on employees Physical and Mental Health is massive. Sedentary behaviour leads to low cognitive availability which translates to a massive loss of productivity and performance.
It also impacts the Emotional Intelligence (EI) and degrades the quality of Decision Making, Management Abilities, Leadership Qualities.

How the Active Office System improves Productivity?

There are three fundamental factors of the Active Office System supporting productivity improvement. These are increased cognitive availability, metabolic energy of NEAT process and the posture of openness and collaboration.
The increase of cognitive availability from 3 to 8 hours, effectively doubles the time normally wasted with sedentary behaviour. Combining increased cognitive availability with enhanced metabolic energy and process improvement enables the exponential growth of productivity. Additionally, standing posture signals a natural openness, hence increasing personal confidence and trust.

How does the Active Office System reduce Chronic Stress?

There are many reasons for stress both personal and work-related. Temporarily acute stress offers a beneficial stimulation. Long-Term Chronic stress, however, produces cortisol which is toxic to the body if not metabolised. The HiACHIEVR Active Office system is designed with physiological, neurological and psychological components. The combination of these helps to reduce and eventually eliminate chronic stress in three ways. Increased body movement and increased metabolism have a positive effect on physical and mental wellbeing. Openness and collaboration signalled by upright posture enable employee engagement. Finally doubling the cognitive availability opens opportunities to improve productivity and lower a pressure to cope with the workload.

How does the Active Office System improve sleep quality?

There are many reasons for poor sleep stretching from medical to stress. The Active Office System helps to reduce work-related chronic stress in three ways. It provides an opportunity to exercise the body effortlessly for the entire day at work. It provides a healthy framework for mental wellbeing promoting openness and collaboration. It doubles time sedentary people missing with low cognitive availability.

How the Active Office System improves Employee Engagement?

The HiACHIVR Active Office System design is based on evolutionary principles stimulating openness, collaboration and growth mindset. From the evolutionary aspect, we are more successful when we collaborate. The Active Office System creates opportunities for engagement because it is based on teamwork and personal short-term and long-term improvement. It makes advantageous to work in the office because it creates an environment conducive to the social collaborative engagement.

How the Active Office System improves Energy?

The Active Office System facilitates physiological transformation which enables endurance to sustain up to 8 hours of low-level diverse mobility. Metabolic energy drives both the body and the brain.

How the Active Ofice System improves Health and Fitness?

Fitness has many components such as strength, aerobic capacity, endurance, flexibility and balance. The process of active behaviour improves endurance, flexibility and balance. With increased endurance the ability to sustain activities longer enables more metabolic energy and better long-term health outcomes. Balance and flexibility are markers of ageing and personal confidence.

How the Active Office System triggers Physiological (Biological) Rejuvenation?

A simple ‘Use it or Lose it’ principle applies to just about any system in the body. Rejuvenation can only occur with a purposeful and deliberate destructive use followed by physiological reconstruction. Muscular, cardiovascular systems and brain work like that. While working in an upright position large variety of muscles are engaged in stimulating muscular rejuvenation. Deep breathing and increased demand for oxygen improve vascularization of lungs and heart. The need to keep balance and movement diversity constantly and increase in low physical activity improve the neural plasticity and generation of new nerve tissue in the hippocampus region (neurogenesis).
